Sliema
Wanderers were the first team to reach the final of the
Rothmans Trophy after beating Valletta 5-2. It was former
Valletta striker Danilo Doncic who scored three goals for
the Blues who managed to turn the score in their favour
after that the Citizens were leading 1-0 at the end of the
first half. With this defeat Valletta are condemned to playing
in the Intertoto Cup, something they were trying to avoid
as this would mean that there will hardly have any rest
before starting the pre-season training.
Kris
Laferla put Valletta ahead on 25 minutes. But Danilo Doncic
equalised on 68 minutes and three minutes later, Noel Turner
converted a penalty to give Sliema the lead. With two goals
by Danilo Doncic on the 84th and the 90th, Sliema sealed
the issue. But more goals were on their way in stoppage
time as Gilbert Agius reduced the gap for Valletta but Orosco
Anonam restored the three-goal lead for Sliema.
